Barcelona president Joan Laporta revealed Rashford’s dream was to finish his career as a “one club man” at United.
However, a falling out with manager Ruben Amorim and limited playing time forced Rashford to seek a new challenge.
He spent the latter half of last season on loan at Aston Villa, who didn’t trigger their £40 million buy option.
Rashford wanted Champions League football ahead of the World Cup, leading to his loan move to Barcelona instead.
Barcelona will pay his full wages and have an option to buy him next summer for around £26 million.
Laporta praised Rashford’s quality and motivation, saying he aims to win the Champions League and World Cup.
“Rashford was born at United and wanted to be a one-club man,” Laporta told Mundo Deportivo recently, reports Manchester World.
“But circumstances changed, and though he left, he remains the same player he’s always been,” the president added.
Rashford’s career continues with Barça, hoping to reignite his top-level impact after a challenging period at Old Trafford.
