The 37-year-old Chivas striker said women were “failing” and “eradicating masculinity” during a TikTok livestream, drawing widespread criticism.
He added that women should “allow themselves to be led by a man,” remarks the Mexican Football Federation deemed sexist and inappropriate.
The FMF said the comments promoted media violence and violated gender equality principles upheld within sport and broader society.
In an Instagram apology, Chicharito said he never intended to hurt or divide, and regretted any confusion caused by his remarks.
He promised to reflect, learn, and express himself more clearly and sensitively in the future to become a better person.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded bluntly, saying Hernandez still has a lot to learn regarding his views on women, reports BBC.
The FMF and both men’s and women’s leagues confirmed an investigation is underway and harsher punishment will follow repeat offences.
Chivas said Hernandez’s views went against club values and confirmed internal action was taken, though specifics were not disclosed.
Hernandez, Mexico’s top scorer, rejoined Chivas in 2023 after a global career that included spells at United, Madrid, and LA Galaxy
